SPACECRAFT Status

AIM progressed to the normal pointing mode using an on-board ATS at 17:17 GMT on March 8, 2008 after having gone into “SAFE hold” on February 7th. All spacecraft systems are showing nominal operations, and the instruments were turned back on Friday, March 14th.

INSTRUMENT Status

All instruments have been off the past week due to the spacecraft “Safe Hold” condition, but were reactivated Friday, March 14th as part of the recovery ATS.

The SOFIE instrument operated flawlessly from turn-on in May 2007 until the spacecraft “SAFE hold” event on February 7, 2008, collecting nearly 99% of all spacecraft occultation events. It is now back on as of 16:05 GMT March 14, 2008 and collecting science data. The first public data release started March 14, 2008 with the release of 2007 May and June data. Processing of all measurements taken through February 7, 2008 will be completed by March 15th and the release of all data up to the Feb 7th “SAFE hold” will be complete by March 21st. Data products for this release include temperature, pressure, water, ozone, and methane mixing ratio profiles, and particulate extinction profiles at 10 wavelengths.

All CIPS data collected through February 7, 2008, when the spacecraft entered “SAFE hold”, have been processed and examined. The CIPS instrument was turned back on following the “SAFE hold” event at 18:06 GMT March 14th. The CIPS instrument has worked flawlessly, collecting data over the Northern 2007 and most of the Southern 2007/2008 cloud seasons. CIPS data have been cited in many general publications due to its unprecedented images of Polar Mesospheric Clouds. CIPS data for the first two PMC seasons are available on the AIM web site.

The CDE instrument was turned back on following the “SAFE hold” event at 20:04 GMT March 14th. The CDE data versions for Levels 2 and 3 are being incremented to version 2. Level 1 will remain at version 1. This version change will fix a pointing issue in calculating mass as well as adding an extra parameter to the Level 2 file. This will take effect on Friday, March 14, when CDE returns to normal science mode.
